T.L. Robertson Library

This is the T.L. Robertson library. It's location is very strategic because it's in the middle of the university. It really helped a lot in my sense of direction when I first came here. Thank God also that most of my classrooms next semester will be in the library building. So, I need not walk here and there. There are one cafeteria(Bookmark cafe) and some lecture theatres in the building outside the library. Library lounge, the only place where you can eat in the library, is on the ground floor which starts at level 2. Curtin University is built on few platforms. That's why you can see some of the building starts at level 1 or 2 or even 3. There is one floor which is full with computers and some magazines with sofas to relax. There are also computers at every levels, and some of the computers can only used for the library catalogue(to find library books). There are five floors in the library with three lifts and few stairs. In level six, there are few computer rooms again and one internet room where students can bring their own laptop and just plug in to the wire and can access to the internet. Printing machine and photocopiers are available at every floor, together with the printing and photocopy card reload.

The library ground floor(second floor). Do you the self-borrowing machine? You just need to show the laser your student ID code and the book code. It's touch screen also to print the receipt of the borrowed books. Can use it to borrow as many books as you want. For degree, one person is allowed to borrow 20 books.

Shelves of Journals.

Lots of rows of journals and books. So, to save space, the journals are packed together on a rail. If you need certain row, just turn the sterring over and it will pull apart so that you can go in and find the journal you need.

The quiet zone in the library. Basically most of the library areas are quiet zone.

There are silent zones too in the library. No talking or discussing allowed.

The Engineering Building

Let's continue with the engineering building.

One of the side view of the Engineering building. Guess how many floors inside? Is 5 floors.

One of the engineering lab rooms which is only for the engineering students. You need your student card to access into these rooms.

Another room in the engineering lab room. It was locked when I took the picture. So, I have to take from outside.

Engineering Foundation Studio. I just know that inside has computer labs from outside. I can't go into that room because I am no more a year one student.

The common room in engineering building.

The common area in engineering building where you can relax yourself after a tiring day or heat up your food. Some of the common area in the other blocks have fridge, pool table, television, or even oven. But too bad, for engineering, there is only one sink and a microwave oven.

Reflection on lecturers for Year 2 Sem 1

Dr Hongwei Wu is one of the minority lecturer which is so good and friendly that I have found in Curtin Perth. No matter what the students do to him, busy talking, making fun when he is teaching, he still shows us the smile. He is the friendliest lecturer that I have found here. But I just could't know why when he called me just now, I tend to get so nervous by just talking with him on the phone.

Well, it's all for my John Curtin Leadership Academy sake where I have to get contacts from these lecturer asking permission for them to become my referees for my resume and also for the recommendation letters. Tomorrow, I'm going to uni again to look for lecturers to show them all my documents. Hopefully they are there because lecturers seldom turn up in this university period.

Anyway, let's talk about this sem lecturers. All are good and experienced of coz. It's then worthwhile of what we have paid for such huge amount in Bentley campus compared to Miri campus. First, let's start with my favourite Fluid Mechanics lecturers. We had two parts. Part A was taught by the Dean of Engineering - Professor Tony Lucey. Like him because he is very experienced. Experience in real life and experience in giving lectures. I found his lecture forever interesting especially when the part where he relates to the real life. He seriously knows a lot of stuff. Oh ya, he is also the unit controller of engineering mechanics 100. Friends, remember where there is a part in the tutorials where the solution written by the lecturer is so messy? That was his handwriting. He is from the department of mechanical engineering. Part B taught by Dr Hongwei Wu(from chemical engineering department). A very good lecturer as I mentioned above. Always try his best to help students.

Next, will be chemistry. Again, we have two parts - Physical(Mr. Barry Thornton) and Inorganic(Professor Mark Odgen). I love Barry more. The santa clause lecturer. He really looks like a santa clause that makes me take his picture in the lecture without letting him know. But this lecturer gives me a bad impression the first time I met him. We had to sit outside the tutorial room for one hour because Mark has misintepret our tutorial location. When sitting outside the tutorial, I could still remember he scolded one lady that asked question "You woman, keep quiet". Well, I didn't know that he was actually joking because he sound very serious that time. After getting to know him more, he was actually a funny guy and knowledgable as well. Knows a lot of things in real life involving chemistry. From him, I even know that we human are actually slightly acidic. Mark was alright. But I still have problem in listening what he speaks tho he always try his best to lecture us.

Another one would be Process Engineering Materials. Dr. Deeptangshu. Again, this lecturer gives me a bad impression from beginning because what I think was he didn't want to accept people ideas coz that time we didn't like the tutorial which really waste our time and we have to get up early at 8am for a "wasted class". Luckily, I'm in the 9am session. But, during our first evaluation which is in the 4th week, we commented this lecturer the most. But he later gave me a good impression that he try to solve the problem that we have commented to the head of chemical engineering. He continued to do his best for us. One thing was the best is during our final examination, he stood in front for a very long time as a encouragement for us and giving us a confidence eye signal(lecturer being there to support). Keep up your good work, Dr.D.

Oh ya, I met Andrew Mariott during the orientation. The lecturer that lots of Miri students dislike him for giving such a tough and hard question in our assignment and being so mean. Well, he really looks like a programmer like what Foad had said. Very untidy. He even wear shorts and t-shirt to the orientation where there are like about 400-500 students. His hair was very messy, too.

Let's have an overall view as conclusion. Well, in Miri, lecturers tend to want students study for exam as when you ask questions in Miri, lecturer will tell you, this is not in the syllabus need not study. Lecturers here also tend to bring you to the real life application and appreciation of the theory. Their aims are different. They want us to do well in real life rather than just examination. During the lecture, they talk a lot about the real life application compared with in Miri, they just talk mainly about the lecture slides.

God's blessings

These two days I have been home "alone" again. But there are two things which make me happy and I want to share it here.

First, I have wanted a working permit so eagerly but it failed everytime I tried. So, it took me three days to just online applying for a working permit. So, I expect I'll only start searching for jobs two/three weeks after because it takes time for the application to process. But who knows they sent me an email informing me that my work permit has already been approved which took only 1 day! Thank God for that. Next, I'll just have to go out and look for jobs. My first destination will be on Monday - McDonald at Vic Park. Pray for me that I'll get the job. Boring being home alone.

Second, I received an application letter for the John Curtin Leadership Academy, which will take 1 year. It chooses the potential students to join. But I'll need to apply again because they want the best out of the best. Although, it's not sure that I'll get into that academy yet, but I want to thank God for all the opportunities that He has given to me all these while.

First, it will be the Intel Science Camp, which only three of us (Darren, Samuel and I) chosen by the school to join. Only one school out of 15 high school in Labuan went for that camp. I'm not trying to boast myself here, but I just truly appreciate God for He has chosen me out of so many people. That was a three-days camp held in Beaufort, beach side hotel (forgot what name). In that camp, I learnt a lot of things. I got to meet lots of professors from the local university and got to organise a small science fair where we have to invent something and promote it to the visitors. I could remember that our group came out with the idea that tomatoes can cast away mosquitoes. We made an "experiment" by putting one person in the jungle without tomato puree and one with tomato puree. We counted the mosquito bites for both of them and it was really less for the one with tomato puree. I never know that tomatoes can cast away mosquitoes. Though our group is not the best one, but I learnt a lot of things on how to write an engineering report with abstract. I was in Form 5 when I learnt all these.

Second, is the Program Latihan Khidmat Negara(PLKN). A young girl who sticks to her home so much that she doesn't want to leave her cosy house, but God picked her for the PLKN. In that three months camp, I learnt a lot of things. One of them is to be able to be independent, although now I still misses home a lot but not as badly as the first day I went into the camp. In that camp, I got to do lots of things which I'll never do in my life if not because of this camp. Well, I got to swim in the river and enjoyed it. Staying in the jungle for one day without shower is the second valuable memory. To be crazy for God where every Sunday we have to get up by 4am to go to BCCM where the service start at 7.30am.

Now, there is this John Curtin Leadership Academy. Though it's not sure yet whether I'll get pick, but I truly want to get chosen so that I can glorify God's name. But it will be His will whether He wants me to get into the academy. Well, this Leadership Academy will take up one year and I'll have to pay for $200. Guess someone will ask me, why get chosen and still need to pay for it. The reason they want us to pay is to make sure that we are serious about going to the Academy's event, and to purchase consumables for these events. Basically, I'll be trained to be leaders of the world. The outcomes from this program will be self-awareness and self management, fund raising skills, sustainability, project management, communication, facilitation and dispute management. One of the best parts of this experience is that I'll meet people who are focussed, ready to achieve and above all, ready to have fun! I'll also make valuable contacts. As well as the other Academy participants, which could be venerable who's who of the student population of Curtin in its own right, I could meet the Head of HR in a multi-national Australian owned Mining Corporation, civil engineering firm and recruiters for government agencies.

Despite all these, I need to thank my heavenly Father.. Thank Him for all these blessings. Thank you, God.

2nd day of the 42 days...

It's now my second day of holiday and I can't see any productive things yet, except cleaning the toilet, which was after being complained by my house owner. How embarassed it is! I had never in my life being complained for the untidiness and this was the first time.

Anyway, what did I do today? Slept only at 3am and had to get up by 8am to go to bank to do some stuff. But end up, the bank was not open yet. So, went straight to bus stop to meet with Stella and Doreen for shopping. First destination, Harbour Town. Was deciding which jacket to buy. Was confused between one non-branded, fury jacket which costs 90 dollars(RM270) and one Adidas, normal jacket which costs 50 dollars. However, I ended up buying the Adidas one since it's cheaper and branded. Then, we took Yellow Cat back to the city. Doreen and Stella suggested Taka(Japanese food) for our lunch, and what came into my mind was I'll definitely spend at least 15 dollars for that meal. But end up, surprisingly, it was quite cheap compared to other hawker food. The large one only costs 7 dollars. Bought teriyaki fish. Very nice meal. But too bad I didn't take any picture. Will remember to take some pics for my blog next time. Love the salad dressing but don't know what is that. It's something like a mixture of mustard sauce and sweetening milk. However, we got lost in the middle of the city when finding for that shop. End up we need to walk a big big round though it is actually just nearby. Anyway, I think is worth it since I got to try the Japanese food there which was quite nice. Thank God for the nice nice food..

Went home about 3pm because both Stella and I were too tired due to lack of sleep. Doreen went off early because she need to fly to Melbourne to meet her sis in the afternoon. Went home and msn.. Chatted with ming siang and Kenin for a while, then went out for dinner which was about 5.30pm.. Jonathan used to eat dinner early because he said dinner is fattening.. So, I have to eat by 5.30pm, and that was why I'm hungry now. Went to the back house to chat with my housemate and played with her dog. Cute dog tho..

Oh ya, was also confusing whether I want to work or not although I don't have the work permit. Rokiah applied for job and got it although she didn't have any work permit. However, God told me that I shouldn't work without work permit, since is illegal and if I really want to work, I still have lots of time given for me to work.

As a conclusion,
Lesson learnt today - Be patient and do not be eager or you will get into trouble

Semester Break

Wow... This semester pass real fast. It passed so fast that I don't actually understand what I have learned throughout this semester and Monday will be my last paper - ChE213 Process Engineering Materials. Really not interested in this unit. So, many things to memorise, polymer, ceramics, iron and steel, non ferrous metal, fabricating and so on so forth. For this unit, without memorising, I don't think one can even answer half of the paper. Anyway, back to the actual reason I post this blog. Was wondering should I go back this semester break since I only start uni on the 30th of July. That's like 42 days break!(=6 weeks.) My sis had been asking me to go back be her tuition teacher again, but most of my cellies didn't go back to Malaysia. So, there will be lots of planning this semester break. Argh... Confused... But I hate sitting in the airplane, transiting here and there, all being alone. Guess I'll just stay in Perth. But what can I do??
Planning:
1. Learn how to use my graphic calculator
2. Watch as much movies as possible (not english movie, I don't like English movie tho)
3. Catch up with my friends through MSN or friendster
4. Stay over in Rokiah's house for a few days?
5. Chat with my darling as much as possible before the next semester starts again
6. Clean my room and decorate it nicely.
7. Go to down south for a camp for two days with my cellies
8. Go to wildlife park with cellies
9. Learn how to cook Nasi Lemak from my Malay friend
10. Help out with the orientation
11. Register for Zion MusicianZ
12. Finish reading at least one English novel
13. Learn more things on blogging and keep blogging as one of my habit, so nect time I can refer back
14. .............
Will be adding some more after I finish my exam... Any ideas for the other plannings?? Feel free to drop a comment for me yea!
